Hi Everyone,

I thought I would add to the recent postings of classic 1960s and 1970s rangefinders. Last month, I was lucky enough to come across an Olympus 35 SP. I bought because it has the unusual feature of spot metering.

Olympus 35 SP vs Olympus 35 RC Review - Twins - By Matt Parry. The 1980s Hollywood stars Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger are the unlikely match to play twin brothers in the aptly named 1988 film, Twins (stick with me on this one). As the story unfolds, (spoiler alert) it turns out that there is some form of genetic engineering going.

The Olympus 35 SP is the big daddy of the Olympus 35 rangefinder series. Top-of-the-line is a phrased used with this camera. The camera sits above the 35RD, and is considerably larger than the 35RC. However, the camera is fairly small/ average size when compared to modern mirror less cameras.

Olympus produced the 35 SP line of rangefinder cameras from 1969 through 1976. Though somewhat overshadowed early on by the explosive popularity of SLRs, the Olympus SP rangefinder models were sophisticated and high-quality cameras. Unique among 35mm rangefinders, the SP featured a dual metering system, with both spot and center-weighted readings (though not a through-the-lens meter). Its.

The Olympus 35 SP is a 35 mm rangefinder camera made by Olympus in Japan. It is the only 35 mm rangefinder with a dual center-weighted average metering and spot metering system. Metering is also available in manual mode, which is quite unusual amongst Japanese rangefinder cameras of this era.

The 35SP, with it's meter readout in EV, initially takes a little more thought and attention, and some fiddling with the aperture and shutter values wrapped around the lens to match the EV value the meter is giving (or to modify the value to ones own judgement).

Sadly, this means a lot of mercury-replacement air cells (not that they last very long, anyway) or adapting a 1.4V silver-oxide battery. Four views of the 35mm rangefinder Olympus 35SP. The lens is big and beautiful, with a distinct yellowish sheen to it, and the rangefinder is exceptionally bright and sharp.

The Olympus 35 SPn is a relatively large and quite impressive-looking rangefinder camera. It is about 5 inches/13 cm long, 3 inches/7.5 cm high. At the time it was originally released in 1969 it was probably regarded as compact.

The Olympus 35 SP has a fully automatic program mode using either a center weighted evaluation, or a 'spot' metering system that was quite rare for the late 1960s and early 1970s. The auto exposure system runs on a tiny battery, and draws so little current, there isn't even an on-off switch.

In April, Olympus released their newest creation, the Olympus 35 SP. Coming down from the Summer of Love in '67 and heading straight for Woodstock in August, the little Olympus was groovy, baby; it even had fluorescent painted guide numbers and focus distance so you could read your flash settings under the black light of said psychedelic venues.

When compared to the diminutive RC the Olympus 35SP is a beast of a camera! It feels solid in the hands, the focus is smooth and quick with what I think is a short throw of movement on the focus lever. Manual metering takes some fiddling, but does work well once you get used to it.

The Olympus 35 SP was sold from 1969 to 1975, and it's a classic example of the genre. It has a number of disadvantages and (fortunately a rather longer list of) advantages over it's competitors: Disadvantages: The auto mode is a fully programmed mode with the camera setting both aperture and shutter speed.

The 35 SP really has an immense amount going for it and it more than pulls its weight in the world of rangefinders, let alone fixed lens rangefinders. It's an overused phrase but the SP really is a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. So, before I get stuck in, here's what's covered in this review: My Olympus 35 SP story
